Overview and Purpose
Your personal privacy is an important issue to the myself and the other administrators of Terrapin Tables. Rest assured that all of the information that is collected will be kept private, and not sold, shared, or given to any third party company or organization without your consent. Since it is important for all users of this site to be aware of what exactly goes on 'behind the scenes', this privacy statment is provided to you in order to better explain what information is collected, and how it is used.
Information that is collected
Personal Information - If you sign up as an author, you will be assigned a username and a password (the password can then be changed). You may also voluntarily provide an email address and a URL for a website you are associated with. This information is kept in a database so that others can find out how to contact you. Keep in mind however, that this is voluntary, so you do not have to provide contact information unless you "opt-in".
Cookies - Cookies are small pieces of data that are sent to your browser from a web server and stored on your computer's hard drive. Cookies do not store or provide any personal information whatsoever - they simply identify your machine. Terrapin Tables allows for a cookie to be set on your computer in order to remember your username and password. Setting this cookie is completely optional by checking/unchecking the appropriate box when you log in. Also, most browsers allow you to manage/delete your cookies at any time. Your browser may also be set up to warn you before accepting a cookie. Feel free to keep all cookies off of your hard drive.
IP Address - When browsing the web, your computer has a unique number attached to it for that session. This information, known as an Internet Protocol address, or IP Address, is a number that's automatically assigned to your computer by your Internet service provider whenever you're on the Web. When you request pages from Terrapin Tables, the server logs your IP Address.
How the information is used
Personal Information - This is simply used to help provide other users with your contact information. This information is not used by any of the site's administrators or any of it's programs.
Cookies - Cookies are simply used to allow the website to remember who you are. The only cookie that is consistenly used is the one that allows you to save your information when you fill in a comment (so it will fill in automatically the next time you psot a comment). Another cookie that I may use is one that remembers what theme you like to view Terrapin Tables in. But so far, the theme feature has been disabled for this site. These cookies are not used or seen by the administrators of this site since it remains on your computer.
IP Addresses - These are used for only one purpose -- to ban disruptive users. I have a list set up (at the moment it has no entries) that forbids posts and comments coming from listed IP Addresses. Otherwise, IP Addresses are not used by anything else.
E-mail
If you have an email account with Terrapin Tables, rest assured that your e-mail correspondance is kept private as can be. Email accounts are protected by a password of your choosing, and I do not have access to this password -- I can only reset it. Your email will not be read, forwarded, or copied without express permission from the account holder. Also note that misdirected email will end up in an account set up to catch such emails. Efforts will be made to discern who the proper recipient is, and the message will be forwarded to that person in a timely manner.
Passwords
I have the ability to reset passwords, but I do not have the power to view them. The password you use to log into the site is stored in a database that I have set up, but the passwords are encrypted once they are set, and I cannot view them in their raw form. As for email passwords, the company that hosts this site has those stored on their own computers, and I do not have access to them either.
Disclosure of Information
Any and all information that is collected will not be provided to any other organization, agency, or company without your consent. The only way your information will be released without your express consent would be if Terrapin Tables was served a subpeona by a U.S. court of law. And even then, there's a chance that I will withold your information, depending on the exact circumstances.
Editing Policy
Users are allowed to edit their own posts whenever they wish. Due to technical limitations, comments may only be edited by the author of the original post or the site administrators. If you wish to edit a comment, email me and I'll change it as soon as I can. Changes will be reflected on the main page as well as in the archives. Administrators may edit users' content at any time. However, this privilege will be used sparingly and will not be acted upon without good reason. You'll find most edits performed by me are to simply correct the HTML code posted by others (bad links, copied HTML code from other websites who use different encodings... etc). I may also edit out comment that is highly offensive, or can be interpreted as a threat against another user. If you spot any abuse of editing powers, please let me know.
If you have any questions about this privacy statement, the practices of this site, or your dealings with this website, you can contact me via
