Mr. Gervais goes to Africa

Frequently mentioned on Mr. Tony's show. Sort of old, but amusing. I am a bit concerned that a man nearly 60 years of age is my chief informant for all things regarding pop culture.

Programming a Night at a Movie Theatre

So, apparently I have won this contest. I would like to solicit ideas from you guys (and ladies) as to what 2 movies I should pick. I already talked to Chris M., and a suggestion I thought was good was to perhaps show one serious film and then one comedy. Anyway, I am sort of looking for ideas, so please let me know what you think. My ideas so far include Apocalypse Now, Anchorman, Saving Private Ryan, Heat, & The Godfather. Oh, and I need to know by Wednesday. So strap on your thinking caps and give me some ideas I can steal.

Better than Albers?

This is pretty cool, and would be interesting to see if this guy met up with the guys that did the 1000 beer pong event (posted a few days ago) what would happen.
I do think this guy was home schooled and I don't know why...

I'm still old

So I looked up a Heelys "How-To" video on YouTube. Some good pointers I guess, but here's two choice quotes from the beginning:

Girl who is probably a freshman in High School -- i.e., a role model to most Heely owners:
"You can grab some air, jump and grind, tweak it out, or just hang"

OK, I think I know what grabbing air and 'just hanging' are (flying through the air, and drinking). Tweaking it out? What, am I putting 21" dubs on these things? I don't even know how to spell dubs. And jumping and grinding? Is that the thing that you see idiots do where they jump over a handrail, and then trip up, and the bar goes right into their crotch? No thank you.

Guy who calls "Heeling" an "action sport", but still gets to make out with high school chicks 'on the daily':
"Word is, when you're pushing the limit, you're eventually gonna bust"

OK, I guess I can't pick on this one too much, but I still don't like the 'Word is" part.

All in all though, I'm still glad I have the Heelys. It's like God has some bet with someone that I won't live to 35.

A-Rod

Around here lately, there have been a series of conversations regarding Alex Rodriguez. As everyone knows, I am not a fan of the Yankees, and may have said some less than flattering things about Derek Jeter during my youth. But I don't really understand the criticism heaped upon Rodriguez. One Red Sox fan pondered the question as to whether they would rather have Rodriguez or Mike Lowell up to bat in a late-inning clutch situation and another openly stated a preference for Lowell. I don't simply think it is Red Sox fans disgruntled that they didn't end up with him. Is the criticism fair? does he receive it because he is a public figure? Because of his salary? The fact that he seems too eager to please? His recent playoff struggles? Some combination of factors? So I was curious as to what everyone thought about this.

Player Suspensions

I hate - HATE - that the NFL suspends players for off-field, even off-season, problems. How is this legal? None of our employers could dock our pay for, say, getting in a barfight on a Saturday night, yet the bar just went a lot higher on the penalties for NFL players who screw around.

What are the arguments against me? That players are role models? Not buying it, role models are role models, and parents need to help kids understand the qualities that make someone worth respecting. What else, the image of the NFL? It's not the players' responsibility to help the NFL look good. They're hired to do a job, and PacMan Jones isn't exactly on the clock while he's in a titty bar in Vegas.

Someone, maybe Jones, should take the NFL to court over this. What dominion do they have over a player's personal life? What right to suspend them for off-field activity? Because it's in the collective bargaining agreement? So what, an illegal contract is null and void.

Goodell said “It is a privilege to represent the NFL, not a right.” This means, essentially, that the NFL has player/personnel dominion over teams. That's horseshit - the 32 teams should be responsible alone for who wears their uniform, and how those players are managed. This will work itself out. Is a guy an ass and not worth having on the team? Cut him and let him try to find work elsewhere - just like every other employer in America. If he's truly useless, he'll be a free agent 'til death. But I'm willing to bet there'd be a lot of teams sending an offer sheet to Jones right now.

This crap bothers me. If a guy's in the drunk tank and misses practice, punish him. If he beats his wife and misses MNF because of his court date, suspend him then. If it's freaking March and the guy is accused of acting like an ass in an event unrelated to the NFL...it's not their fucking business.

For the record, you all know I'm not defending Jones per se. He's a complete dipshit, and WVU can suck it. But just because this happened to him doesn't change my opinion on "player conduct" policies. It's all a business isue, not a football issue. If they'd have tried this crap in the early days, Madden would have 0 rings right now. But no, the early Raider teams just "embodied the spirit of the team" or some stuff...guh. Since when are football players supposed to be well behaved anyway?

Ridiculous

This is one of the stupider things I've seen in a while. I blame Mike. Soon, the standings will all just look like this:

LEAGUE STANDINGS
Team Win Loss Tie
JC Warner 0 0 12
Chesapeake Vets 0 0 12
Bay Carpets 0 0 12
Movieland 0 0 12
Geohring Printing 0 0 12

Only in America...

One night I went to bed and thought, man, I wish there was someone who could create a 12 person Beer Bong...who says dreams don't come true? Anyone surprised a Brewer's fan came up with this?

Anybody with me?

This summer we'll be doing work on the house we're buying, moving, and planning our wedding. We're driving across the country, we want to go to the beach, and of course there's Pub Crawl VI (date TBD). But this is currently number one on my list of things to do this summer.
