So after a few days aboard a Navy destroyer , I have arrived at my next destination - Hong Kong. I just got into my ridiculously opulent room, and I'm really hoping my "Deluxe Harbor View" upgrade gets by the finance people. I'll upload more when night falls because apparently it looks really nice.
Until then, I'm going to enjoy my room while I wait for my laundry ($44 USD for two days worth of clothes...).
Posted by Rick at July 12, 2007 03:16 AMWow - nice work. Your view is much better than mine.
Any good stories?
Posted by: Pat at July 12, 2007 07:39 AMWay to rock the PC-XT and dot matrix printer Pat, where is your stack of TPS reports?
Hopefully you get to see the city while you're there Rick. I've heard Hong Kong is great for getting suits made for exceptionally low prices. Who else would chip in for Rick to get a Michael Irvin suit custom made?
Posted by: Mike at July 12, 2007 08:21 AMIt's funny you should mention that - there are tailors everywhere. As soon as I stepped off military-dominant territory, I started to wave down a taxi, and a guy runs over to me and asks if I need a tailor. I asked him if he had a car, and we then parted ways. Some guys at my work told me when they go to Korea they get suits made - all custom, and with a 1-day turnaround. So, I'd thought about getting a suit - I'll have to check out prices.
So far though, no great stories. Japan was boring because I had to work on my midterm. The ship was fun for me because I got to see all sorts of fun areas of the ship (the bridge, combat systems room), but the work wasn't all that great.
As far as HK, I got here, sent out emails, and then went out. I settled on a American-German themed bar, because I don't feel like decoding menus tonight. Good beer and bratwurst, by the way. I then watched the 8:00 "Symphony of Lights" that the city puts on every day - while music plays on our side of the harbor, the buildings on the other side all start blinking like crazy and the whole area lights up with spotlights and lasers. I took a movie with my camera, but it doesn't do it justice.
I then got approached by two young women who took my picture and then talked to me for a bit - they wanted to practice their English on me. But I'm still self-conscious - if I'm traveling in the same area as a bunch of sailors, and women come up to me, I start making assumptions about their line of work. I'm an ass. They told me the best place to drink on the island (I'm on the mainland, the pictures show the island part, so it's at least a ferry/taxi/subway ride away), but I can't remember what the area was called, so I'm now debating whether or not to go out....
Posted by: Rick at July 12, 2007 09:11 AMI thnk you're thinking about an area that's called (phonetically) Lin Kwai Fong. My old bos used to go to Hong Kong regularly, and that's supposed to be the hot spot, the best food, clubs, etc.
Most of the suit makers are, allegedly, top-notch...but you'll know you're in a top notch place. Don't expect to come out looking like Ocean's 11 if you went to a place that also serves raw eel on a stick.
Go ahead and get a few hookers. At the same time. Why not. Slap 'em around, even. No, in all seriousness, apparently there's a considerable, um, "ladyboy" workforce. So keep yourself sharp - physically drunk and mentally sharp.
Posted by: McCreary at July 12, 2007 01:27 PMAnd this, friends, is why we all said we missed a little bit of McCreary in our lives...
Posted by: Pat at July 12, 2007 03:55 PMDamn right. Now here comes Nate to make a Thailand joke at my expense, since we're talking about the Asia-Pacific region and rumor/urban legend has it you can rent a 12 year old in Bangkok...and of course, "Bangkok" lends itself to all sorts of tired jokes.
And the district was actually called Lan Kwai Fong. Dig this: http://www.lankwaifong.com/index.php?page=home
I know people that go to Hong Kong and only eat at Dublin Jack's, since they're afraid of like Hong Kong water or something. Like the dishes are washed in Irish water because the place is called Dublin Jack's.
Stick around for a while - July 28-29 is Julyfest. I have no idea what that means, but the logo for the event is a huge mug of beer and all the posters have naked chicks on them. So, right there, you have two of your three favorite things (the other being "things that need to be plugged in").
Word to Hong Kong.

One more and you're mine, bitch.
A-9. What now.
Posted by: McCreary at July 14, 2007 01:52 AMWhat, no love for Battleship? I thought that was HILARIOUS.
