I am not sure calling this an outrage does it justice.
Posted by John at May 3, 2007 01:38 PMYeah, amongst a laundry list of fuckups in this "war," the constant mistreatment of soldiers and veterans has to be the most purely disgusting. Between the steady downward slide of veteran's benefits under Bush, the poor-is-putting-it-mildly performance of veteran's hospitals, the lack of proper armor/equipment for the people being actually shot at, the indentured servitude that is the continued extension of tours (reminiscent of the flight requirement from Catch-22), and now the anal fisting of people wounded "defending their country" (which is not happening in this bizarre sort of conflict we started in Iraq), no word but "disrespect" can really describe how the administration feels about soldiers. Disrespect, while their throwing them into the fire again and again. This is simply vile...not that anything good came out of any part of this.
And sure, I have the rep around here as the resident ultra-liberal (not true) half-hippie (it was just the hair, I think), but in case you didn't know, my father, uncle, and grandfather all spent solid time in the armed forces (Navy, all of them), and my Dad's paycheck has come from the US Naval Academy for nearly my entire life...along with my grandfather's subsistence, for at least the whle time I've been alive. I'm not explicitly anti-armed forces or anti-war - WWII needed to happen (never forget your great-grea-grandfathers SAVED THE FUCKING WORLD), and if China/North Korea/whoever landed tomorrow and said "what now," for example, fighting would be a necessary act - but I've yet to see any evidence that this fight is worth a single American life...and here's the Commander in Chief, shitting all over everyone in the desert with stars and bars on their shoulder.

Posted by: Chris at May 3, 2007 11:53 PMWhat's the slogan, "Strong. Army Strong." How about "Betrayed. Army Betrayed."
