So every year, Beloit College puts out a list of facts to show the mindest (and inexperience) of the incoming freshmen. Since this year's students were born in 1987, there are items like:
A neat little read for those that can't wait for the inevitable email forward.
Posted by Rick at August 25, 2005 02:24 PMWow. The one that got me was the Hubble Space Telescope. I remember when I first heard about it, years before it was planned to be launched (yes, I've always been a nerd), and had to wait and wait until it was finally in space. And then that whole f'd up mirror thing before it got good pictures.
That hits me every once in a while, too, with Alex. One example: I've given her a few of the toys that I had when I was her age, and then it hits me that the toys she's playing with are over 20 years old. Another one: to her DVD players are the normal way to watch movies. She never even had to go through that stage where you rent the VCR from the video shop.
Posted by: Fatboy at August 25, 2005 04:44 PMThose kids have never known a world without the Fox Network, Nintendo, Vanna White, Cabbage Patch Kids, The Cosby Show & CD players. And they likely won't remember a time without the Simpsons or car/cell phones.
Posted by: John at August 25, 2005 04:52 PMPeople used to email these to me when I was the editor of the AACC newspaper...they sucked then with their veiled insults, and they suck now.
I haven't read the list, and won't, but what I hava noticed - especially when I was a 25-year-old undergrad - is the fact that I remember a time before the internet. I remember research in books (since when is "three internet sources" restricitive?), I remember going out to play, and it was fucking dogeball and fucking tackle football we played, and I remember when people respected cars for more than the size of the muffler or the amount of fiberglass someone could drywall-screw on. Sorry, but that last one has really been bugging me lately.
