Thanks to the good neighbors of Bay City I have broadband in my room...gotta love unprotected wireless accounts. Props to my sponsors at NetGear...I couldn't do it without you. Anyways...I'm back online, fast, for free. Score.
Also, I'm about done with the move. Moving SUCKS. And I dodn't even find anything of interest in my old room. Usually I'm good for some stashed cash, the odd condom wrapper from a brand I don't buy, a dimebag, old food, etc. This time: nothing.
Posted by Chris at May 26, 2005 12:44 AMSo I got greedy and tried to open up the ports on whatever connection I'm using. I went for good ol' 192.168.1.1 and found out I'm on a DSL that's 1792k down and 448 up...not bad. I tried to login and got: "Please enter the password for 'Modem Secure'." Heh, yeah, so secure. I'm not going to try to get the password, because then I go from "listening" to "stealing", but I know a few nerds appreciate what I'm doing and get a good laugh at "secure."
Posted by: Chris at May 26, 2005 01:04 AMIt seems many of my neighbors are down with the wireless networks, and they're all wide open. My shit is locked down tighter than a nun's twat.
Posted by: Nate at May 26, 2005 05:20 AMA little more than half the networks around us are locked. One time I tried getting to my router and accidentally got into someone else's though. I thought that was funny.
WEP can be broken pretty easily though - you just need a piece of software, and a few days of listening to the traffic. I hear the new stuff works (WPA) but I didn't feel like telling everyone they had to buy more expensive WiFi cards in order to use the network, so I'm just using WEP.
Posted by: Rick at May 26, 2005 12:51 PMI guess it depends on how secure you're trying to be. Any network can be hacked into, but even modest protection keeps out the casual neighbor who's wanting to steal bandwidth, or a person driving down the street looking for unprotected networks. It's like that old joke about going into bear country with sneakers. It won't let you outrun the bear, but it'll let you outrun the people you're with. And as far as people snooping on you, shouldn't any important information, like stuff that'd be going to an https site be encrypted before it leaves your computer.
And yeah, my brother's neighbors and my brother in law's neighbors had unsecure wireless networks that I could use with my laptop. They're all over the place.
Posted by: Fatboy at May 26, 2005 06:18 PMYeah, I'm not impressed with my ability to plug in and turn on a wireless card, just with the fact that one neighborhood on backwards-ass Kent Island has three open networks. Visit Kent Island - Broadband Free Until 2003.
But still, free internet is a good time. Weeeeeeeeeee.
