I just went and bought myself a soda from next door, and got a nickel as part of my change. I wasn't sure if it was real at first, since I'd never seen one like this before. I just assumed that the Mint came out with something new. Apparently, I was right - it's part of the new series of nickels. So, is the Mint just trying to make it easy for counterfeiters? I mean, they've come out with so much new money over the past few years, from peach colored twenties, to a quarter for each state, and now this, that when I see a bill or coin that I don't recognize, I just assume that the Mint's come out with a new one. So if I ever get slipped a counterfeit, I wouldn't realize it. And I bet that Joe Blow behind the cash register at Wal-Mart isn't going to know the difference, either.
Posted by Fatboy at April 12, 2005 04:59 PMIs it worth it to counterfeit quarters? Would all the effort involved be worth the reward? I guess on a large enough scale anything works . . . like taking aluminum cans to Michigan in a mail truck.
Posted by: John at April 12, 2005 05:38 PMHey, buffalo nickels are back. Neat.
I don't like all the new coinage either. It's fine to change designs once in a while, but having 50+ types in circulation seems like a bit much. But counterfeitting quarters either doesn't happen much, or those that do just use metal slugs because things like vending machines and bus hoppers don't ever check for patterns (just metallic content). Or so I've heard :)
