As of 12 Noon, WHFS is gone - replaced with a Spanish pop music station, 99.1 El Zol. I stopped listening to this station right around the time I got my drivers' license, but they were the #2 rock station in the country, and the HFStivals are freaking legendary. As a guy that likes modern rock music, I'm a bit bummed the station is gone. Though they played mostly crap, they were still the only radio outlet for a lot of young, loud white boys.
On a personal note, I am bummed because I no longer get the benefits of knowing a guy that knows a DJ there. We used to hang out in the booth in downtown DC (next to Hooters, in the skate shop window) talking shit, and it was always nice to have an extra in for concert tickets. Plus, he's a cool guy, and now he's an unemployed cool guy. I haven't tuned in 99.1 in probably 5 years, but Infinity Broadcasting can still suck it.
Posted by Chris at January 12, 2005 01:39 PMWell I'll be damned. I didn't believe you at first. I checked the calendar, thinking it was April 1. Nope. I went out to my car, flipped on the radio, and son-of-a-bitch...salsa music.
I guess I really never listened to 99.1, except now that the Junkies are/were on there. Oh well.
Achi-achi-achi
Posted by: Pat at January 12, 2005 02:43 PMFor anyone that cares, apparently the Sports Junkies are moving to 11 am, Tuesday on WJFK, which is 106.7 FM, I think. Terrible time slot.
Posted by: John at January 12, 2005 04:10 PMI was a bit shocked when I heard Telemundo coming through my speakers and my radio displayed 99.1. At first I thought it was a joke, but then I had to call Chris and John to make sure I wasn't nuts. Wierd...
At that time slot is pretty horrible. Weren't they with JFK before 99.1?
Posted by: Nate at January 12, 2005 05:39 PMThis is the last thing they played before the switch, according to this chat. For what it is worth.
Posted by: Pat at January 12, 2005 05:50 PMFunny Pat...the "prank" of that mp3 got me thinking: what kind of prank?
First, it could be that this is some 24-hour punking of theDCMetro crowd...except I know guys personally affected by this, the Junkies are moving, etc.
So, second, you have to consider the prank is on whomever was listening to "Ass and Titties" believing that's what HFS would go out with. Which is the truth.
Walt tells me they cut over in the middle of a Rage Against the Machine song: some news site, which I can't find now, claims the switch was made exactly at 12 noon with, apparently, no regard for programming.
Lots of people are screwed: I know a girl, well, we've met backstage at shows and people I know know her pretty well, recently left K-Rock in NY to work for HFS. Like, within-6-months recently. Now she's unemployed and KROC won't have her back. Tim Virgin, a guy I've hung with, is now out of a job. He seems to be looking into satellite radio, which means a move to NY. Which means his brother Tommy, who lives with him and a good guy in his own right, would have to go too. There are probably a hundred stories like this. People have families, homes, and are now shit out of luck. As I understand it, no one will be retained.
I saw an El Zol pres release from Infinity that said they wanted to tap into the heretofore untapped "Mexican" market. Not Latin, Latino, or Spanish-speaking. "Mexican." Nicely put, asshats.
Posted by: Chris at January 13, 2005 01:06 AMWell it wasn't "Ass & Titties" when I linked it. It was a song called Last Good-Bye by some guy named Jeff Buckley (according to that chat above), then they cut to a WHFS promo, that morphed into a Spanish "99 punto Uno" promo. Then some sad ass piano music...fade. I imagine they put up Ass & Titties when they realized people were stealing their mp3 - if you listen to the very last part of the A&T soundclip.
It would be a pretty good prank, if they could pull it off.
Step 1: Throw up a false front page on the website, play a few hours of salsa music stolen from Los Panchos, creating a a big buzz around the area
Step 2: Big joke
Step 3: Profit
Como esta burros? La radio espanola es tonta.
Posted by: Chad at January 13, 2005 08:22 AM98 Rock was really clubbing WHFS this morning. They were playing Latin music in and out of their breaks and taking calls from Latino listeners. Apparently they have made "Adios HFS" shirts and you can exchange your HFS crap for 98 Rock crap by mailing to the radio station or bringing it to a station appearance.
Posted by: John at January 13, 2005 09:44 AMYeah, last night that Mickey douche on 98 Rock was broadcasting from a Mexican restaurant, and kept saying something that I have now forgotten: but I remember it was real dickheady. It was something about how they kicked some HFS ass, or how one more contender got beat down, or something. How's that for specificity.
On the other side of the coin, the more intelligent listeners of 103.1 made Mexican Radio - one of the most fun songs around, for a completely unknown reason - the most requested song of the day. That's funny.
Posted by: Chris at January 13, 2005 09:55 AMThe 98 rock guys were dicks...and strangely enough the DC101 guys were almost apologetic, not so much to the listeners, but to the people who worked for 99.1. It seems they were relatively cool with one another, and understand that there's some pretty good people without jobs now...
Posted by: Nate at January 13, 2005 10:18 AMThat's funny. I read somewhere that the program manager at 103.1 was one of the pioneers of HFS. And I got $5 that Chris knows him or something.
I listened to Elliot this morning, and he didn't bash anyone for my time in the car. He even said he didn't want to take any time off in the near future because of "what happened yesterday in the area". But I heard no spanish references. I imagine alot of people in radio have been through this before, so they can relate and sympathize.
Does anyone remember 105.1 from back in the middle school time? They switched from like a younger mix station (played hip-hop and some alternative stuff) to Christian music at one time. Devestating.
Posted by: Pat at January 13, 2005 10:22 AMYesterday evening, Don & Mike spoke a bit about the HFS thing, since both HFS & WJFK stations are Infinity stations. They talked about the people who were out of work, and referenced the Sports Junkies, who used to work on their station and seems as though they will return to that station. Don & Mike sounded concerned that there was too much programming on their station and someone was going to lose their job. They suggested that they take Bill O'Reilly off the air entirely, they said a bunch of nasty things about him, which I enjoyed.
Posted by: John at January 13, 2005 10:39 AMI caught the tail end of a story on the ride in to work this morning, where they talked about HFS changing over to latino music. I think that beginning of the story was mostly about HFS, but by the time I caught it, they had moved on to the generalities of latino music and how it's becoming more popular.
Anyway, it sucks. I remember HFS being my favorite station for new music while I was living up there. Maybe that 103.1 that you all mentioned is better, though.
So, had HFS just gone completely to the shitter, or was this a big shock for everyone up there?
