Lynchburg Oddities

Since some of you guys are heading down to VA soon for the UMD game, check out this list of 'attractions', like the cat with no head, and a cemetery owner that alphabetizes people's plots. Validity of the facts is questionable, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Did someone say Lynchburg?

I hate Lynchburg. Lynchburg is the home of Jerry Falwell and Liberty University, where he is the Chancellor. Liberty's campus has fences topped with razor wire at the entrance. Just about everything closes at 6 pm, even the liquor stores. There seem to be remnants of the Old South there, people are deferential, almost uncomfortably so. One fall weekend I went to a haunted house there. At the end, everyone was shuffled into a room and lectured about Jesus. Religious activists roam the mall. En route to high school, you may encounter and anti-abortion protest outside of the school. People assume that, as a fellow white person, you are also racist. If you are caught standing outside of your car after dusk in a park, a police cruiser comes, and then his back-up arrives. And finally, there is a school there which I have particular disdain for, which is a rant unto itself, but here you can find the source of my irritation at the time. To be fair, these are broad generalizations. There were plenty of fine people there. I still hate it. I think I need a cigarette.

"a male visitor may be escorted to and from the bathroom by his R-MWC host, who must stand watch outside the bathroom while the guest is in the bathroom"

Yeah, I could see a rant coming out of that.

Having also spent a non-trivial amount of time in Lynchburg, let me echo John's comments. I'm guessing that between the two of us we could put together quite a rant. At the top of my list would most certainly be guest housing, and that security guard that accosted John and I for trying to help move several heavy items into the residence hall without an escort. I can only hope that there is a special part of hell for that particular individual.

Good rants. I'm not a fan of Lynchburg either, although most of it is simply by reputation. I did spend a week during the summer there once for Habitat work. It was with my church, and we were holed up in a high school, so it wasn't very exciting. When they gave out self-image-boosting, everyone-gets-one type nicknames/awards at the end of the week, I got "Card Shark", because I spent most of my time playing cards to avoid all the religious activities.
