Stand Up

During the game this past weekend in the section next to ours, Roy and I saw a group of fans escorted out by stadium security & state troopers. Roy saw this mention in the Diamondback which indicates that the fans were ejected for repeatedly standing up during the game. Here are a pair of letters to the editor regarding the incident. Is it possible that you can actually be ejected from the game for standing up. At the West Virginia game, the entire stadium stood and cheered for the majority of the game. It seems as though if the fans are encouraged to be enthusiastic, you should be permitted to stand and cheer.

Follow-Up: Here is another Diamondback article relating to the situation. I would like to have heard Yow give some kind of response. And finally, a kind of position statement from the Diamondback.

I read about this. It is a damn football game people, stand up! We have a similar situation in our section. No one got kicked out, but you want to stand up and people behind you want you to sit down. It isn't chess.

We were told by our own fans, while at WVU, to sit down on a 4th down play. BAH!?!?!

There was a letter to the editor today from a guy (never a student, but a long-time season ticket holder and a Terrapin Club member) about his past - and, now, current - efforts to get a standing room only section. He said he has been bothered by cops/officials before about standing, and after submitting a petition to Yow several years ago, was told "no stadium rules prohibit standing." Yet, if an old alumnus that doesn't understand the nature of a football game complains, they will toss you for committing no infraction other than bugging an uptight idiot. It's completely fucking retarded.

This guy also points out the great disparity in offical UMD messages to the crowd - Fridge begs for the "12th man" to get preposterously noisy during games, and Yow will get you removed for not partaking in tea and crumpets (I'm winston churchhill...). What kind of sense does that make? None, and that's why it comes out of UMD.

Did you hear Ehrlich gave a motivational speech to the team? It's, I believe, his first visit to campus in two years. He doesn't give a rat's ass about tuition, graduation rates, accesability, etc., but if the football team slips into mediocrity again so do the revenue numbers they generate...and we can't be having that, people.

Fuck Yow, fuck Ehrlich, fuck Duke. I plan on being a loud idiot at every game, and I would even were I blessed enough to sit in the hallowed seats of the alumni section with those of you that have college degrees before your 25th birthday.

I think you may be off about Ehrlich, but I agree with pretty much everything else. Besides, political debates on the internet are like the special olympics; even if you win, you are still retarded. (borrowed from Fark).

If I recall correctly, the entire lower deck at the West Virginia game stood for the majority of the game. I don't believe WVU is unique in this aspect. If you want to sit for 3 hours, stay in the parking lot. Upon passing through the gates, I believe that the event ceases to be a social one. Is it a great leap to believe that people would complain because someone was cheering too loud such that it was interfering with a conversation. I fear that those people who don't want people standing feel empowered by the removal of those fans. I want to be able to stand, at least occasionally, and I don't want to have to deal with state troopers, stadium security and any other posture police when I do. I feel myself getting worked up over what seems like an inconsequential issue, but I feel like dampening enthusiasm for the game affects the experience. Perhaps civil disobedience will be organized, a stand-in perhaps?

Here is the petition. I signed it, although one section of standing is kind of odd. I just think the whole thing should be a non-issue. I don't believe people have these problems at other schools.
