Looks like Groening had a lot to say at ComicCon. Happily, there won't be a movie until after the series is done, and the series won't be over for quite some time. But the big news was Springfield is soon to legalize gay marriage, and someone is stepping out of the closet. Of course, like all of you, I instantly thought of Smithers, but the story also points out the good money is on Carl and Lenny - which would rock. Plus, they've been boosting those two's "relationship" over the last few seasons, what with that oil fire one, the newspaper headline one, etc. Lots of people are talking Skinner too, and he has that whole dominated-by-his-mother thing going on, but he did Selma (or Patty) and Crabopple, so I think he's good. My money is on the dark horse: Comic Book Guy (remember Mr. X? Exploring the "final frontier?" Maybe that got his warp drive running, or whatever).
Discuss your nomination for gay Springfielder in 100 words or less, then pass your papers forward.
Posted by Chris at July 28, 2004 12:53 AMWhat about Patty? She's never been with a man. But if homosexuality's genetic, her twin's been married plenty of times. Though probably more out of security than love.

Anywho, here goes my too-in-depth analysis on the dark horses, most of which have been mentioned already -
Patty - If it's not Smithers, I'd say it's her. She's had zero boyfriends (compared to Selma's four husbands). And in the episode where Selma marries Skinner, Marge once said Patty chose a life of celibacy. Patty herself said she loses the last lingering thread of her heterosexuality when she sees Homer run naked through the kitchen (this was in a Halloween episode, so maybe it shouldn't count). She seems to hate all men, and doesn't like seeing her sister with others.
Lenny - Recently, he's been daydreaming about Carl, and there have been plenty of references to them being more than friends. Lenny does live alone (as we see when Marge becomes a real estate agent), and he's certainly good friends with Carl. Carl himself has a family ("I can't feed my family with a codpiece!") so he's probably straight. It'd be a shame though, cause the best-friends dynamic works well.
Captain McCallister - He's made some offhand comments in the past (his crew resorting to homosexuality 10 minutes after leaving shore... etc.)
Comic Book Guy - Well, he looks at women on the internet, and has slept with Agnes Skinner (shudder), so he's probably not the one. But you never know.
Skinner - Yeah, he married Selma (but never slept with her), and is now married to Edna. It's possible, but they've already screwed with his character enough (Armin Tazmarian...) so hopefully they leave him alone.
There's quite a few more it could be. There's a bunch of references to homosexuality out there already.
Posted by: Rick at July 28, 2004 09:33 AMI hope it is not Lenny and Carl. I like that dynamic they have. It is kind of implied, but not overt. I think it is better that way.
Captain McAllister does like hot pants too right? That would be a hilarious episode. "Yar, I do enjoy the company of men."
Posted by: Pat at July 28, 2004 12:43 PMHow about the two police officers, who I think are Eddie & Lou? Dr. Nick? Duffman? Groundskeeper Willie? Professor Frink? Krusty? Sideshow Bob? (come on, its Kelsey Grammer), Drederick Tatum? (personal favorite), Supernintendo Chalmers? (I think he has a wife though).
Posted by: John at July 28, 2004 01:20 PMDuffman banged the bartender from Melon Shakers (Duffman says a lot of things). I think I remember seeing that Professor Frink is married to some incredibly hot woman, Krusty is simply the horniest guy in Springfield - remember that porno collection? If Clinton bought it, it was assumed to be straight. Groundskeeper Willie is, so far, straight: on the one with the internet - "that lass needs to trim her hedges...Agh! That lass is Willie!"; and he was doing Sherry Bobbins. "Celibacy" means no sex, not just no sex with members of the opposite sex, so I think Patty is out. Also. she does have a thing for McGyver.
You think they'll just make it Smithers to be safe?
Posted by: Chris at July 28, 2004 04:03 PMI am sticking with the sea captain. It would be funnier. Smithers is too easy and boring.
