Who can forget the memories? The tickets to a Ravens game & a Godsmack/Creed/Our Lady Peace concert. The blood shooting out of my arm. Driving to the blood drive after a night of drinking, stopping at Wawa, purchasing a 2 liter bottle of Sunny D, a turkey sub & twizzlers, and downing the concoction en route. After said concoction, passing out anyway. The fender-benders. Good times. Anyway, the annual 98 Rock Blood Drive is coming up again, so if you'd like to give blood, are a vampire, enjoy the possibility of free crap, want to get light-headed the old-fashioned way and be a cheap date for at least one evening, this is for you.
Posted by John at July 12, 2004 10:35 AMAh - the fender bender. And we didn't even get to give blood! But the ride home with Mike's hood in our face was pretty funny.
Posted by: Pat at July 12, 2004 02:56 PMOh yeah that was neat. John & I having a conversation then WHAM! Good times :-)
Posted by: Nate at July 12, 2004 05:52 PMI can probably go. I'm O Neg, so I've given several times already. Hell, I'd go just to witness all the stuff that happens to you all before and after.
Posted by: The J at July 12, 2004 06:12 PMI knew as soon as I saw the title of this post that would get brought up, as rightfully it should. Unfortunately I have to wait a little longer to give blood, the Red Cross says you have to wait 12 months after getting a tattoo in order to give again. Something about hepatitis, or the hiv. Oh well, maybe next year.
Posted by: Mike at July 12, 2004 06:12 PMWhere the hell was I last year? I remember a bunch of stuff happening to you guys, but I was elsewhere. Anywho, I think I could give some this year. I like giving blood, even though I'm AB+, which is the most selfish of blood types. I can accept any blood type out there, but only the other 3% of AB positives out there can accept mine.
Posted by: Rick at July 13, 2004 10:11 AMSeems like your blood type is pretty useless, Rick. Also, OJ did it.
Posted by: John at July 13, 2004 12:07 PMi'm pretty sure that since someone gave me mono this year i'll have to hold off til next year. thanks for the heads up though!
Posted by: michelle at July 13, 2004 04:11 PMIs it bad that I don't know my blood type? All I know is that I am STD free, my cholesterol is almost at the "too high" mark but my iron levels are good (I'm sure that has nothing to do with the steak I eat at least 3 times a week), and my thyroid is underactive (stupid thyroid!). I've never given blood because I don't meet the weight requirement. Sounds like fun though.
Posted by: Meg at July 13, 2004 04:12 PMThe Red Cross says . . . moo!
You cannot donate blood if:
- you do not weigh at least 110 pounds
- if you have donated blood in the last 56 days
- if you have had hepatitis with infectious mononucleosis
You can donate blood if:
- you had infectious mononucleosis ("mono") once the infection has passed, as long as you did not have hepatitis with the mononucleoisis.
- if you wait 12 months after treatment for syphilis or gonorrhea (we all know who this is for)
- if you wait 12 months after a tattoo. This requirement is related to concerns about hepatitis
Heh, I was just coming here to mention that I had never given blood before (well, for others' benefit) and that, thanks to Self-Endangering Recreational Practices, maybe I wouldn't be allowed. But, I have no diseases except for laziness, am way the hell over 110, and like I just said, I haven't given blood lately. As in ever. Pay attention, I just said that. So, I'm down with dropping a liter or two on the Red Cross.
On a side note, I'm just coming back up after a hard drive crash, so I lost everyone's email address...so email me.
Posted by: Chris at July 13, 2004 10:54 PMi have been turned down before because i was born outside of the country. is that still a barrier?
Posted by: roy at July 14, 2004 09:38 AMHere is some stuff regarding travel outside the country, immigration, etc. I know some of you have traveled to the Carribbean or Mexico, so it may affect you, I dunno.
Posted by: John at July 14, 2004 10:24 AMthat's bullsh...i can never give blood again?! i'm so mad...
Posted by: michelle at July 14, 2004 04:07 PMWhy? Do you have some disease or something? Did I miss a memo?
Posted by: Chris at July 14, 2004 11:10 PMyeah i got mono this year - and the hepatitis with it. boooooo.
