So I just picked this article off of Page 2 of ESPN. Usually their stuff is alright, but I thought this was kind of neat. Great Feats we'd like to see. Some of them actually are conceivable (Bonds hitting .400, Wie winning a PGA event). I thought the line about a sub-2 hr. marathon by "A Kenyan" was funny. Anyway, some of them are ripe for debate, I figured I would share.
Posted by Pat at May 4, 2004 10:56 AMHow cool would it be to see a 7 foot boxer (Manute Bol does not count, he looked liked a sapling in a gale.)? Tyson is like 5'10". There are big boxers now, I think Lennox Lewis is like 6'6", but can you imagine a guy like Shaq pounding on some 5'10" guy? I am a sucker for physical specimens in boxing like Michael Grant (6'7" 250) who may be a tomato can and hasn't fought a guy I have heard of since 2000. Boo.

No chance he can get 100%. Even getting 98%, given the number of free throws taken in a season is something in itself.
I also don't think anyone will hit 5 HR's in a game. It would have to be a blow out, and the guy would have to petition his coach to even keep him in the game. Although enough steroids will get you alot of places.
57 games is so damn hard to do, if only for the pressure. But I think Ichiro is the only guy right now who could do it. He is half way to first base by the time he hits the ball.
Posted by: Pat at May 4, 2004 04:49 PMI obviously have less of a grasp of how hard some of these will be to beat, but I agree that 100% free-throw for a season is insane, and will probably never happen. JJ is making 20 out of 21 now. He'll have to make 21 out of 21 over seven times in a row.
It's possible for the men to win the World Cup, but I don't think Adu will do it. To get really good pro players, we need kids playing soccer as kids. If anything, Adu might help out with soccer's popularity, which may give us better players 10 years from now. Then we might have a shot.
And is there any reason why they picked a 57-game streak? 50 is a nicer number, and much more possible...
Posted by: Rick at May 4, 2004 05:13 PMyes rick, they picked 57 games for a reason. i'll leave it to you to google some form of "dimaggio 56 game hit streak 1941"
someone will hit .400, but they will have to be someone like bonds who walks a ton.
and though i'd love to see the men win the world cup, it don't think it's happening by 2010.
Posted by: at May 4, 2004 08:09 PMRick, kids are playing soccer. It's the most-participated-in little league sport in the country. There are two reasonss USA soccer teams stink - kids stop playing soccer as high schoolers, and American adults don't care that USA soccer sucks.
Soccer sucks.
Posted by: Chris at May 5, 2004 06:15 PMExcellent rendition there Chad. And what the hell are you doing typing so coherently the night of Cinco de Mayo?
Posted by: Rick at May 5, 2004 11:09 PMI did it at work during the day - I had to wait to post it until I got home since I needed the stellar picture of your head.
Posted by: Chad at May 6, 2004 07:53 AMI would like to point out that I did have (at least what I thought was) a funnier picture that has since been accidentally replaced by "the man."
Posted by: Chad at May 6, 2004 11:11 AMThere you go - it is all fixed. I would also like to point out that Mr. Fisher also knows at least 6 more digits of pi than most people.
Posted by: Pat at May 6, 2004 04:27 PMActually Mr. Fisher used some high-tech NASA engineering software here at work to find it.
And by high-tech NASA engineering software I mean a calculator.
Posted by: Chad at May 6, 2004 04:30 PMHey Rick, look closely at that picture. Do you see anything wrong?
Posted by: Fatboy at May 6, 2004 11:00 PMYes, yes I do. Chad and Pat were wondering if I would correct it...
