I just read an article on CNN about a bunch of anti-semitic graffiti that got put on a synagogue. People in the article blamed Mel Gibson's new movie for stirring up anti-semitic sentiments. I went and watched the movie this past weekend, and I've talked to a few people that have seen it, and it amazes just how many Christians do feel anti-semitic after watching the movie. Jesus was a Jew. He lived in a Jewish land, full of Jewish people. If someone was going to kill him, of course that person would be Jewish. But all of his followers and supporters were Jewish as well. Gibson even showed several priests disagreeing with Jesus' trial when he was first brought in by Caiaphas's guards, and being kicked out of the trial by the angry mob. How people can be so stupid and miss the point so badly is beyond me. It would be like blaming every christian alive today for the string of Catholic priests that molested boys. Idiocy.
Okay, that's it for my venting for today.

Aside from a few people that disagreed with the high priests, there didn't seem to be a lot of people supporting Jesus. Of course, Passion really didn't tell much of a story anyway. So I wouldn't put it past some ignorant people to see the high priests as representative of the Jews, and Jesus as some sort of being unto his own -- certainly not a typical Jew. But yeah, people are idiots. Isn't it taught day in and day out that Jesus died for the sins of Christians alive today anyway? That the high priests may have been the means to an end, but they weren't the reason he died. Actually, I heard there was a line to that effect in the movie ("His blood is on us, on our children.") but it is only spoken (not subtitled).
Posted by: Rick at March 9, 2004 01:57 PMI would imagine that the Jewish clergy treated Jesus as any religion would treat a perceived threat or potential radical. It seems to me that is crucifixion is important to the Christian faith. Where would Christianity be without it?
Posted by: John at March 9, 2004 02:24 PMI haven't seen the film - no more BitTorrent seeders - but I wouldn't be shocked if Gibson had included some anti-Jewery in his pic...he's a raging Catholic ("God does everything...God made my bed this morning") and it would have been possible - even plausible - for him to try to stick it to the Jews, especially since they run Hollywood anyway (joking).
I thought Jesus died to forgive original sin, thusly forgiving mankind and allowing for a clean slate to start anew; that "Jesus died for you" was more emblematic of his giving it up for mankind in general instead of a literal "you." I could be wrong: it's not a point I've really researched...you know how I feel.
Besides, Jesus was black.

exactly, the sins of predecessors should not affect judgment of the sucessors. holding people who lived subsequently would be like not letting people into the garden of eden just because of what adam and eve did. oh wait...

NEW YORK (AFP) - One of the most talked about films of recent years, Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Curly," depicts Jerome "Curly" Howard's final 12 hours on earth and, by Gibson's own admission,
includes several hours' worth of extremely graphic and violent images of Curly being repeatedly slapped, poked in the eye, conked on the head, and other forms of torture at the hands of fellow Stooges, Moe and Larry.
Industry insiders have predicted an opening week take of up to 30 million dollars. Those figures are all the more extraordinary given that just one year ago Gibson was struggling to find a distributor for a film that boasts no big-name stars and dialogue lifted entirely from 1930s Columbia two-reelers. And, in what appears to be an omen, the lead actor was struck by a pie during filming.
Controversy has focused on charges, mostly levelled by Shemp fan clubs and strongly denied by Gibson, that the movie somehow blames Shemp for
Curly's death and will fuel anti-Shemp sentiment.
Those accusations have to an extent been buttressed by unguarded comments from Gibson's father, Hutton Gibson, claiming that the success of Shemp's career as a character actor independent of the Three Stooges is greatly exaggerated and that there is a conspiracy aimed at proving that Shemp was really a more talented, funnier Stooge
than the others.
Gibson and his father are both Traditionalists, who have never accepted the various reforms which, among other things, led to Shemp, Joe Besser and "Curly" Joe DeRita being named Stooges.
Gibson has staunchly defended himself and the film against the charges, insisting that he had never intended to trigger a "blame game" over responsibility for Curly's death. "Curly was beaten for our enjoyment," Gibson said. "He was wounded for our laughter and by laughing at his wounds we are comforted and healed. That's the point
of the film. It's not about pointing fingers -- except, of course, to poke out Curly's eyes." Gibson then added, "Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk. Woo woo woo woo! Why, soytenly!" and barked like a dog before slapping himself in the face several times.
Some pro-Shemp groups, notably the influential Amalgamated Morons League ("We're not just morons -- we're organized!"), have argued that
while Gibson may not be anti-Shemp, his film is capable of arousing hatred against Shemp and other later, lesser Stooges.
