Hussein

So Saddam Hussein has been captured. He's now being held in Qatar and denying any WMDs. Any particular thoughts out there? Should (would?) the international community push for a death sentence, or would that make him a martyr? Wouldn't it be fun to just put him in a cell with a bunch of Marines?... etc.

Just because no one else will say it...

It's nice they found him just in time to boost mid-American morale for the holiday spending season. Does this mean we'll "find" Osama in October, readying for the Bush-Cheney '04 vote?

That's just conspiracy theory...but I am wondering - under what authority are we holding him prisoner? His country never did anything to us without our military being there first, and we're not exactly on a UN peacekeeping mission.

Pushing for a death sentence is a foolish idea in my opinion. It's nice that the guy him, I am not sure how much it will change things. Perhaps conflicts will subside. And maybe I missed this day in class, but have WMD's been found yet?

Posted by: John at December 15, 2003 10:04 AM

No WMDs have been found. The most damning things they found were conventional missles with ranges long enough to hit places like Tel Aviv (this is against a UN regulation passed after the Persian Gulf war), and aluminum tubes that could have possibly been used in the centrifuges needed to enrich plutonium, but were later found to be used for other purposes. Most people really didn't expect to find WMDs anyway, but those that vocalized it were considered conspiracy theorists. It's obvious Bush never cared about WMDs anyway, we know N. Korea has them, along with the long range missiles needed to hit the continental U.S., and we haven't done much to stop them...

I wouldn't kill him for the martyr factor (these people aren't exactly in the right mind), but any public humiliation would be nice. If he gives up some others, and eases conflict, it is probably enough. He is certainly more valuable alive than dead, if what they allege he knows is anywhere near correct.

I think this proves that China is now a world power.

Saddam was a secular zealot, not a religious one. Iraq is probably one of the most tolerant middle east countries when it comes to religion. I don't think martyrdom is a possiblity, unless it enrages all rich camel jockies to line all their spider-holes with gold.

Even though I don't generally weigh in on these discussions for fear of treading too close to the classification line, this one I will reply to.

Chris, do you really, and I meant honestly, believe that the US and Coalition are/were holding Saddam and UBL until a time deemed "convenient"? I know you still believe that the 11 September attacks were committed by the US government, and I think you're horribly off-base there, and equally far off-base here.

As for the trial, Saddam will most likely be tried before an Iraqi civil (read non-military) court for crimes committed against Iraqi people. He is also slated to be charged at the Hague with "crimes against humanity". His sentence will come from the Iraqi people, which seems most appropriate in this circumstance.

Rick is partially correct, no stockpiles of completed WMDs have been found in Iraq. However, there has been a great deal of evidence uncovered regarding the WMD development program. Rick, I encourage you to read through the report presented by David Kay to Congress, you'll find the evidence that has been released there.

As for the comparison to North Korea, your logic is faulty in this case. The reasoning for going into Iraq was to stop the Iraqis from completing their development of WMD; North Korea is believed to already have nuclear weapons, and the associated delivery vehicles, making it rather difficult to march across the border. You may also want to check your sources for the range of NK missiles...

Nathan, you're right, Saddam was a secularist, and certainly no friend to a lot of the Islamic world, however he was seen by much of the "Arab Street" as a hero for standing up to the Great Satan. Most, if not all, Arab leaders were happy to see him go, but he retained a lot of support from Muslims around the world.

Lastly, before anyone asks, the above are my opinions, informed solely by unclassified, open source information. Classified questions may be addressed to my ICEMail account.

I don't think the US was behind the Sept. 11 attacks in the raving conspiracy theorist sense. I think they knew it was coming, and I think a VERY strong case can be made that no commercial airliner hit the Pentagon, but certainly this wasn't Bush's doing...he couldn't have pulled off such a well planned job (bah-zing).

And I don't think the Saddam capture was planned for the Xmas season...that was humor too, and not even mine...I stole it from some website. Bush couldn't have pulled that off either.

What I do believe: the US was going into Iraq regardless of WMD or any other infractions for personal (Bush: "I'm going to get the guy who tried to kill my dad" - '99) and economic reasons. I think the government is intentionally allowing the public to confuse terrorism with Iraq - I'm still waiting for the part where he provoked us into attacking him. Yes, he's a prick. Yes, things will maybe be eventually better in the MidEast if things are allowed to develop in a manner that is fair to the people that live there. But, that won't happen, and there are far too many things wrong with the United States for us to either "correct" other countries, impose our will upon them, or blow billions of dollars in what I feel Bush sees as an oil field while too much in America is ignored.

I don't follow current events enough or know enough about international politics to make an intelligent statment about Husseing, so here's my best shot at an uneducated one. I don't think he should be executed, if just to remove the chance of him being a martyr. Put him on Elba and let him die an old, broken man.

As for Chris's statement about a plane hitting the Pentagon, I know 2 people who were in the Navy Annex at the time, so they had a pretty good view. They were on the wrong side to see it crash, but they saw it fly right overhead, being so low they thought it might actually hit their buidling, and then heard an explosion. And we heard this less than an hour after the fact. And these are government contractors (civilian), not government employess or members of the military. I have no reason to doubt their story, especially with all of the other people backing up their story. As far as there not being enough damage, the Pentagon is made of concrete. It is extremely massive compared to a jetliner. I don't have a problem accepting the fact that a jetliner only damaged the outer ring. (It wasn't a small explosion, either. I felt it in Alexandria).

I hate to continue this thread. Really, I do. I can't explain how much I don't want to write this.

Fair enough on your link, I won't deny your right to conspire (it is eerily interesting), but what happened to the people on the plane who would have died? Who killed all these people?? 64 people plus families all disappeared? or are hidden? or are they not real people?

Posted by: Pat at December 16, 2003 02:02 PM

i too hate to continue this thread but i wanted to write to say that for once i agree with chris when he wrote -- there are far too many things wrong with the United States for us to either "correct" other countries, impose our will upon them, or blow billions of dollars in what I feel Bush sees as an oil field while too much in America is ignored. well written Chris.

Chris, you think the Pentagon wasn't hit by a plane?
BWAHAHAHAHA!!!
ps. The earth is flat and I killed Kennedy.

Posted by: That guy at December 16, 2003 03:32 PM

I didn't say I necessarily believed it, but that it was a strong case, i.e., one idea. Where was the wreckage? Where were the ambulances? The bodies? The luggage?

Truth is, I don't think much anymore about politics, religion, etc. None of it matters to me. I'll always be able to take care of myself, and unless outside circumstances infringe on my happiness, I'm good. It's selfish as shit - I'd love to be an altruistic champion of someone's cause - but truth is, one day I'll be dead. There isn't enough time for me to get all worked up about any of it. There was a time when I'd be in the streets of DC with signs and a bullhorn over this Iraq deal, but I care about my friends, my family, and myself - the end.

Most of the extreme arguments I post are just to debate (like talking sports with John). There are more important things to me than Saddam Hussein, Sept. 11, or God. Namely Casey, my parents, and you guys.

I just keep myself open (there are some who would disagree) and make my own judgements. That's whereI come from on religion, why I don't trust a word out of the mouths of the media of the government, and why I hereby refuse to get into any more serious discussions on TT. I'm tired of not smiling on this site.

COCK! BALLS!

Yeah. That was more fun that politics.

Posted by: Rick at December 16, 2003 05:15 PM

The luggage? The bodies? An ambulance? haha.
Have you ever seen a car that got smashed up and caught on fire in an accident? Multiply that impact by 1,000. A plan smashing into a 5 story (above ground) steel reinforced building with a 24 inch concrete/stone surrounding at 250 miles an hour (minimum) loaded with a full tank of jet fuel is going to burn steel, the fuselage, glass, anything....and an occasional Samsonite and skin/bones. I understand the idea to question and sometimes reject what you are fed by the government or media but do some more hunting on your own past that site you posted (which, by the way is paraphrased from a French guy who hates American government...Thierry Macsomethingorother). And I agree that politics is boring and sucks and I don't mean to bring it here. An old man is waiting for the doctor. The doc comes in and says "I have some bad news for you. You have cancer and alzeimers." The old guy says: "Well at least I don't have cancer."
See you in hell.

COCK! BALLS! DOUBLE POST!!

Posted by: That guy at December 17, 2003 10:44 AM

Wow, see me in hell? At least you had the balls to put your name on that post...oh wait.

Hey, every plane crash I've ever seen (obviously, not in person) had a ton of leftovers...there were identifiable human remains at least. And, airplane fuel doesn't burn hot enough to melt steel, contrary to your post. That's one of the reasons engineers are confused to this day as to why the WTC towers collapsed. And of course the guy who took the time to build a page about a US conspiracy isn't a fan...but do you think Rumsfeld and Bush present an unbiased view of the Middle East? The golden rule to all sorts of media, I've found, is that finding "truth" is impossible...only when you synthesize the extreme reports from both sides to you find anything close to fact. "Truth" is subjective anyway, just like history is only the viewpoint of the guys who won the war.

Don't attack me, these aren't my causes...I just point out alternate viewpoints. It's called "debating." If you want to "see me in hell" stop being a pussy* and put your name on the post. We'll talk.

*No offense to the lovely ladies that frequent TT.

Posted by: Chris at December 17, 2003 11:02 AM

Yeah, I gotta side with Chris on this one. While I think he is off on the plane thing, his at least presented some information and put this name to it, not just a bunch of name calling and bullshit that someone doesn't even own up to.

Posted by: Pat at December 17, 2003 11:22 AM

In case anyone cares, the WTC was designed with the possibility of an airplane crash in mind. As I understand it, the impact of the plane blew fire retardant materials off of the structure. The outer structure of the buildings was designed to bear a signifigant portion of the building's weight, so the hole caused by the plane itself helped compromise the structure. It is also my understanding that while steel didn't melt, it becomes less rigid at temperatures experienced within the building, at becomes signifigantly less stable when it experiences varying temperatures. It seems that the temperature difference was more important than the temperature itself.

TV told me this & TV doesn't lie . . . teacher, mother, secret lover.

Whoops, looks like the Intarwed didn't translate my joke meaning very well. I did not mean to say you are going to hell, I was joking about my cancer/alzeimers joke and how I'm going to hell.
And I put "That Guy" because I don't know any of you and you don't know me and you'll just go "Who the hell is that guy Tom?" Anyway, I'm Tom.
I'm not sure if Snopes is a recognized source here but here's a site for reference on this subject:
http://www.snopes.com/rumors/pentagon.htm
I in no way am trying to attack you, I agree this is debating. I believe a plane hit the Pentagon, you don't. I read your opinions and debated them with my opinions. So anyway, I'm Tom, I "own up" to writing this. I like this site, I come here randomly for absolutely no reason. Sometimes I just repeatedly hit refresh to read the Family Guy quote generator. Best. Thing. Ever.

Yeah, my bad. Forgot to mention you can put in height and width settings along with the src and alt parameters. So I set the height and width, and then put links around it to link to the full-size image. Like this:

I like the girl all the way to the left in the 3rd picutre (the one that's cut off):

  • You can only see part of her face - She's mysterious
  • She's got a beer - She drinks
  • Her eyes are closed - She's drunk right now!

1. i'd like to say that i'm happy to be providing the 32nd comment in response to the original Hussein posting
2. since john, pat, and rick have already laid claims to some females in those pictures, i must ask "where are all the men?"...lovely ladies have needs too.

Damn that looks like fun. The picture of you with the cops is HI-larious.

How was the harassment of Miami fans? I just need to make sure I am prepared for next year's MD/VT game.

Posted by: Pat at December 18, 2003 02:11 PM

Nah, it's not too bad...the usual taunting and trash talking but no fights or anything really...just like everywhere else, the Friday night is good natured and the Saturday night is a little more extreme since the game is over. I was in the Miami section for the game so it was great for me. I also went to Philly for the Temple game (TAME!) and C'Ville for the UVGay game...got kicked out in the second quarter. I hate that town.
Looking forward to the ACC rivalries of next year!!
