Terrapin Tables was founded in 2002 by four contributing members of society: John Albers, Jeff Lewis, Rick Nelson, and Pat Shafer. John and Pat had known each other in high school, and then met Jeff and Rick at the University of Maryland. Thanks to a mutual appreciation for fine alcoholic beverages, the four became very good friends. One day, they were sitting around enjoying some of those fine beverages at an establishment known as the Santa Fe Cafe, and decided that they needed something better to do. It's not that they weren't enjoying their lives, they just wanted to be more productive. One of them (the exact name has been lost to the fogs of time) came up with the idea of manufacturing tables for parties to sell to other students and alumni. Being avid sports fans, it was decided to make the tables appear like basketball courts and football fields. (Well, only two of the four founding members were avid sports fans. The other two just thought it would be cool to make tables that looked like sports arenas.)
So, after a good deal of procrastination, the four finally got around to making a prototype table. The prototype allowed the four to experiment with different techniques, and perfect their skills in construction, decoration, and finishing. It also gave them a new table to use in their place. With the prototype table built, they realized the vast potential that it possessed. Like it was envisioned, it was an ideal table for parties; not only could it hold snacks and drinks, it was a great conversation starter. But, the table could also be used for eating, playing board games, card games, the occasional drinking game... Now, with their prototype table built, and their web site up and running, the four founders see nothing but blue skies ahead.
